Who am I?

"And I will be a Father to you,

and you will be sons and daughters to me,

says the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians 6:18

Many people do not have a great relationship with their father, so the image of God as a loving and merciful father doesn't resonate for them. Human love is imperfect, but God's love is unconditional and unfailing.

I was blessed to have a wonderful father, and he taught me about compassion, generosity, empathy, and love. He was a pretty big deal in my town, and everyone knew that I was his daughter. It was my identity.

As an adult, I am realizing that identity is a fluid concept. We change and grow, and often how we identify ourselves changes also. A job change, a loss of a parent or child, a divorce, a move...all of these things cause us to pause and think about who we are now, and who we want to be.

When I stop to consider that I am a child of God, that identity will never change. I don't have to earn it, and I cannot lose it. If God is the ultimate King, then I am a princess, an heir to His wonderful inheritance. With God, I don't have to be or to anything. He is perfect, and He loves me. He's a good Father-it's who He is. I'm loved by Him-it's who I am .

Lord, thank you that you are the Perfect Father. Your love for me never changes, and you will never leave me. I can rest in knowing that I am your precious child. I don't have to strive to be something or someone, I can just be. You are God, and I am yours. I am loved; it's who I am. I can rest in that assurance and comfort today.
